The large hardon collider

Large Hadron Collider (LHC) , the world’s most powerful  Particle accelerator . The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was constructed by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN)  in the same 27-km (17-mile) tunnel that housed its  Large Electron-Positron Collider   (LEP). The tunnel is circular and is located 50–175 metres (165–575 feet) belowground on the border between France and  Switzerland . The LHC ran its first test operation on September 10, 2008. An electrical problem in a  cooling system   on September 18 resulted in a temperature increase of about 100 c  (180 °F) in the magnets, which are meant to operate at temperatures near  absolute zero   (−273.15 °C, or −459.67 °F). Early estimates that the LHC would be quickly fixed soon turned out to be overly   optimistic . It restarted on November 20, 2009. Shortly thereafter, on November 30, it supplanted the  Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory ’s Tevatron ...

Dark Halo

A dark halo is the inferred halo of invisible material (dark matter ) that permeates and surrounds individual galaxies, as well as groups and  cluster of galaxies . Evidence for the existence of dark matter first came from studies of the motions of stars and gas in galaxies. For example, the quantity and distribution of luminous matter within disk   galaxies cannot account for the rotation curves observed, implying a significant invisible component. In a similar manner, velocity dispersions measured in the outer regions of elliptical    galaxies are higher than expected given the luminous matter within the galaxy. Estimates based on these considerations suggest that perhaps as much as 90% of the matter present in galaxies is in the form of dark matter. Evidence for dark matter is also found through observations of the motions of galaxies in groups and clusters. Using a similar argument to that applied to stella...

International Space Station captures stunning views of New Zealand

Astronauts on the International Space Station have shared a bird’s eye view of Aotearoa without (mostly) its long white cloud. The station took about three minutes to track from the west side of the lower South Island to the east of the North Island on Monday, passing over the West Coast, Wellington and Hawke’s Bay on its way. Video tweeted by ISS Above – a device that streams live views of the earth – showed the view from the station as it flew over above the country. The snow-capped Southern Alps can be clearly seen, and eventually the lower and eastern edges of the North Island are also in shot. According to MetService, a west to southwest low brought clear skies across the country on Monday, making it possible for the country to be seen so clearly from space. Fresh snow had also recently fallen across much of both islands, which is visible in the video. The ISS Above Twitter account said that the three-minute video shows one of the longest passes the space station can get acr...

Johnny Depp verdict

Washington:  The jury in the bitter defamation trial between "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard concluded deliberations for the day on Tuesday without reaching a verdict. The seven-person jury will resume their deliberations on Wednesday morning in Fairfax County Circuit Court, near the US capital. The panel met for seven hours on Tuesday and two hours on Friday. Closing arguments in the high-profile case were held on Friday at the end of a six-week trial featuring claims and counterclaims of domestic abuse. The 58-year-old Depp flew to England over the Memorial Day weekend and made surprise appearances concerts by Jeff Beck in Sheffield on Sunday and at Royal Albert Hall in London on Monday. Depp, a guitarist, has his own band, the Hollywood Vampires, with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. Depp filed suit against Heard over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018 in which she described herself as a "publi...
